Don Imus and Al Sharpton Square Off Over Racial Remarks

I am never shy about kicking a man when he's down as long as I didn't like him much to begin with. So today, I want to highlight the self-immolation of Don Imus, a shock-jock who ran amuck last week.

Now he's trying to save his job. Here I offer his vain attempt to save his public ass, publicly, on Rev. Al Sharpton's Radio Show. Adjust your speakers, click DOWNLOAD and give a listen. You can settle back in your chair or continue to surf the Internet while you listen.

Now, Al Sharpton is not a perfect guy himself, but over time, he has won my respect. Imus, I have never respected.

Here's a notable shakedown/takedown of this human scum.

Didn't see your post until I posted my own, Yellow Dog. I'm glad there is diversity on this blog.

Imus has a couple of stones to go into Sharpton's radio show and stand tall. Sharpton's no shining pillar of ethics, either. Imus will come back from this stonger than he is now. You'll see>

Gwen Ifil, in opinion piece in the NYT, says that Imus'

. . .sincerity seems forced and suspect because he’s done some version of this several times before.

I know, because he apparently did it to me.

I was covering the White House for this newspaper in 1993, when Mr. Imus’s producer began calling to invite me on his radio program. I didn’t return his calls. I had my hands plenty full covering Bill Clinton.

Soon enough, the phone calls stopped. Then quizzical colleagues began asking me why Don Imus seemed to have a problem with me. I had no idea what they were talking about because I never listened to the program.

It was not until five years later, when. . . Lars-Erik Nelson, a columnist for The New York Daily News, to finally explain what no one else had wanted to repeat.

“Isn’t The Times wonderful,” Mr. Nelson quoted Mr. Imus as saying on the radio. “It lets the cleaning lady cover the White House.”

I was taken aback but not outraged. . . .

To his credit, Mr. Imus told the Rev. Al Sharpton yesterday he realizes that, this time, he went way too far.

So here’s what this voice has to say for people who cannot grasp the notion of picking on people their own size: This country will only flourish once we consistently learn to applaud and encourage the young people who have to work harder just to achieve balance on the unequal playing field.

Let’s see if we can manage to build them up and reward them, rather than opting for the cheapest, easiest, most despicable shots."

Get a Life, GetaLife. Gwen Ifil is the gentle lady of the PBS News Hour. For her to be aroused is no meager event. It is totally believable that Imus offended her as she related. I have to side with the Yellow Dog Democrat here.

I can't believe intelligent people are swarming over the still warm cadaver of Don Imus? Two posts on the same topic? Such trivia! Why not debate Anna Nicole Smith? Or pet food? Give me a call when you stop watching this crap on TV. (I won't be back until you do!)

Geta a Life, ALL of you!

I guess I have to post this twice:

Take a hike, Messenger. This is worth talking about. Listening to Randi Rhodes this afternoon. She makes the connection: Don Imus is just the fall guy for what ails (hate) talk radio in the United States. All across this country, conservative hate-mongering radio rages, trying to split and divide America - to drive us apart. In this context, Randi says, Imus is just the court jester. He is to be sacrificed so that Coulters and Limbaughs can continue to spread their toxic spill. They ruin America from within while Bush ruins her from without. Imus is the Scooter Libby of talk radio, protecting all of the Cheney's who are licensed by the FCC.

Worth talking about.

I give Imus his 'props' for making a determined attempt at apologizing. Much as I like him, that's more than Al Sharpton did for the Tawana Brawley incident.

I have always believed that heat produces light, confrontation produces understanding and conflict produces truth. When the best of the best on both side talk to each other, reality is changed.

I saw some of that on Tim Russert's show this morning when Gwen Ifil appeared simultaneously with David Brooks and others. They were supposed to get to the issue of A.G. Gonzales, but never made it, such was the heat and light generated over this Imus caper.

All assembled agreed that it was time well spent. I will provide a video clip link when and if it becomes available.
