In the Humble Opinion of LittleBill, Socialist, Atheist, and Humanist
There's a Big Difference

If you don’t know the difference between dedication and intent on one hand, and awareness and response on the other, then you don’t understand the difference between the faithful follower and the thinking nonbeliever.

I was referring to inter-relationships between strangers in which those people who deliberately set out on occasion, and after exhortation, to do good to their fellow man, on one hand, while failing to see other occasions in which their help, or at least courtesy, would come in handy. This usually happens when the time set aside for "doing good" has already come and gone.

For the thinking
nonbeliever, on the other hand, his moral being is so much an integrated part of who he is that "doing good" is not something he searches out, but something that confronts him unexpectedly and which he inherently addresses regardless of time or circumstance.

The encounter need not be urgent, while on the other hand it may involve a life.

My own life experiences now that I am struggling to walk and can no longer drive my car or walk my dog have brought very much to my mind how very little human beings see or care about each other, especially if they do not know each other. There have been many times when people passing by (as I walk with a cane) brush up against me and nearly knock me down.

This is just one example of a much larger picture, parts of which I add to my mind as time goes by. And the larger picture expands to include other nations, other animals, and the beauty some of us were born into and many more who unfortunately were not.
